Flood Events in the South Fork Shenandoah River!

 Hello again, 

This week we are going over the impacts that floods and droughts can have on a watershed! This is very relevant information considering the hurricane season that we are having and recent storms surges that have left various regions of the southeastern United States in disrepair.

Floodplain around North Fork Shenandoah River

Happy Sunday,  This week's blog post is going to be about a very specific area of the Shenandoah River. I wanted to get maps showing the floodplain around the North Fork of the Shenandoah River right next to the Town of Strasburg in Virginia. The reason that I chose this area is because in a search of the VA DCR's Virginia Flood Risk Information System (VFRIS), it seems that this whole area has either a medium or high risk of flooding so I was interested in the land use data for the town and how they mitigated flood risks. Why I chose this watershed

 Today on the study of Virginia's Potomac-Shenandoah watershed, I will be talking about why I chose to study this watershed and why it's special to me.  One of the first reasons that I looked at watersheds within Virginia is because I've lived in Virginia my whole life. The watersheds found around the Commonwealth are familiar to me in some ways but I knew I wanted to learn more about one, in particular, that I grew up next to. As I grew up in Northern Virginia, I was surrounded by the Potomac-Shenandoah watershed and I was constantly hearing about how this watershed, as well as several others in Virginia, drained into the greater Chesapeake Bay watershed. I also grew up learning just how important it was to conserve and protect these watersheds but I can't remember hearing about why they are so important.  With this study, I hope to answer that myself.
